Good morning! Mixed clouds and sun today: there was a shooting on the No. 49 bus, and also a science fair with a hundred over-excited middle schoolers. But if you’d like to rant about the total collapse of the city, we’ve got an an app for that.

Does the five second rule actually work? Does your heart rate change when youโ€™re watching a horror movie? Does Diet Coke explode crazier than Coke? Last week at Buena Vista Horace Mannโ€™s science fair, about 100 middle schoolers proudly presented tri-fold poster boards on their experiments. โ€œWith the whole garden thing, this yearโ€™s been eventful,โ€ said one parent, referring to the arsenic and lead detected in the schoolโ€™s garden and water in December.

Explosions were a strong theme in the fair, and slime continues to be a popular subject for inquiry. As for results, it turns out the five-second rule is “gross.” And according to Gabriel, an eighth-grade scientist, โ€œDiet Coke explodes less and normal Coke explodes more,โ€ and may get all over your clothes.

A shooting Sunday evening on the No. 49 Muni bus near Mission and 13th Street left one person hospitalized. The heavily used line runs along Mission, and the shooting temporarily re-routed other Muni bus lines. Some Mission residents have called for increased security, and data show violent crime slightly up by 6 percent from 2021 to 2022. San Francisco still remains in the bottom half of major American cities experiencing violent crime.

Nonetheless, outrage over crime (and urban annoyances) continues to go viral. Joe Eskanazi invites you to generate your own hit piece on San Francisco using a Mad Libs-type app developed by Will Jarrett that lets you mimic the style of a Nextdoor complaint, a “Why This Couple Had to Leave SF” op-ed, or an “Out of-Town Newspaper Discovers SF” dispatch. “If it feels like all the recent articles about misery and exodus in San Francisco were written by an AI chatbot, rest assured,” says Joe, “they were not.” But now you can write your own and post it to the comments section–check out our latest submissions. (“Hi everyone! I have seen several coyotes in the vicinity behaving friendly and I donโ€™t think they live around here.”)

More to come,

Sara
