Good afternoon!

May the Fourth be with you. (Sorry.) And as for Cinco de Mayo, we’ve compiled an exhaustive list that will keep you busy through the weekend.

Over the next few days you can find free art exhibitions, multiple block parties, and much, much more stuff to do. But where to begin? We offer a carefully curated list, from a lowrider show and Mariachi bands to classical music performed by some of the finest musicians in the Bay Area.

The Board of Supervisors approved a $3.3 million settlement for a cyclist struck by a city vehicle at Valencia and 20th streets in 2019. The settlement is this yearโ€™s third multimillion-dollar settlement for a non-fatal vehicle collision involving a city employee.ย

A driver rear-ended one car, then sideswiped another and knocked over a tree last night, before abandoning his vehicle and limping away. Witnesses said his Honda was still smoking.

Management refused to recognize unionizing efforts at the California Academy of Sciences, forcing the union to hold an election. The union had hoped to avoid a fight by collecting enough workers’ signatures on cards.

Rodrigo Santos, who faces a federal prison sentence this June, coolly presented his plans for a rear porch at an outreach meeting. He assured attendees that he’d be accessible. โ€œI work 24/7, you can contact me Sunday,” he said. “I wasnโ€™t baptized, I rarely go to church.โ€ย

The owners of a building on Mission Street are seeking to replace it with a ground-floor business and additional residential units on top. If approved, it will be the third neighborhood site to follow the demolition-to-mixed-use trajectory.

Plenty to stuff–to read, to do. See you in the neighborhood!

I provide editing support for Mission Local from New York, about 2500 miles away from SFO. (I just looked it up.) This allows me to retain my journalistic objectivity and fussy adherence to East Coast standards of punctuation. I got involved with Mission Local a few years ago through Lydia, whom I met in the early 1980s at The New York Times, where I was a business reporter. Since then I've been in and out of journalism and nonprofits, and have also tried my hand at fiction. A couple of years ago I contributed Mission Local's first fiction series, a comic novel called Love in the Middle Ages.
