Brava Theater will host two performances of Gary Soto’s In and Out of Shadows this Sunday, featuring several young actors who have had personal experiences with the themes the musical explores: Being undocumented, living as an immigrant, feeling part of two different worlds.

The musical introduces a cast of characters who have arrived in the Bay Area without documentation, drawing on the experiences of real-life undocumented immigrants. The passage of Assembly Bill 540, also known as the DREAM Act, allowed young people who found themselves at home in the United States but without papers to attend college in California, and pay in-state tuition. Youths who pursue this path are often called “Dreamers.”

Some of the performers in In and Out of Shadows, like the characters they play, have personally faced the challenges of being a Dreamer.

Tickets are available on Brava Theater’s website.
