Good morning!

You may have heard that the 49ers won last night, and are on their way to the Super Bowl. The Mission exploded in joy: Crowds spilled out of bars dancing and shouting, waving 49ers flags and setting off fireworks.ย  One person was injured in a shooting around midnight at 25th and Folsom.

There’s another game underway, though. Joe Eskenazi looks at the crowded field of moderates running for mayor this year, and analyses the math: Progressives, he says, will actually decide the election.

That’s not likely to make Garry Tan, tech CEO and a major donor to moderate SF politicians, happy. “Die slow motherfuckers,” he wrote on X about supervisors Chan, Preston, Peskin, Walton, Ronen, Melgar, and Safai.

And speaking of the mayoral election, get your tickets now for Joe’s conversation with candidate Asha Safai. Friday February 2 at Manny’s.

More soon,

Sara

Asking if SF is still liberal is silly

SF progressives have no candidate for mayor. But they’ll decide the winner.

“The city isn’t as liberal as either its most ardent supporters or fervent detractors would claim.”

A post on X from Garry Tan wishing death upon San Francisco supervisors, reading: "Fuck Chan Peskin Preston Walton Melgar Ronen Safai Chan as a label and motherfucking crew ... And if you are down with Peskin Preston Walton Melgar Ronen Safai Chan as a crew fuck you too ... Die slow motherfuckers."
