But first some breaking news: Following Annika Hom‘s great Mission Local story about frigid conditions at City College campus buildings, the college’s board president has called for a Monday emergency meeting about the problem, and designated millions to fix heating issues. The meeting will be Monday at 4p.m. at the Mission campus; just to be on the safe side, wear your long underwear.
There will be stuff to do all over the Mission on Saturday as part of Acción Latina’s Paseo Artístico: Precita Eyes’ pop-up mural painting on Harrison and 24th Streets at 1p.m., performances by Andrea Maldonado and Jessica Recinos at the KQED Commons at 4p.m., and more. Our Distillations column checks out the drinks, music, food, and new location of Bissap Baobab—and the complaints of its neighbors. “I’m assuming these neighbors are supervillains,” writes Benjamin Wachs, “who have come to San Francisco to destroy all the art and culture that the pandemic didn’t get.” The good news is that Bissap Baobab is thriving, and has a message for everyone: “If you learn to live in the neighborhood, your life will become so much richer than if you try to force the neighborhood to live with you.”
The San Francisco Public Library hosted a presentation last week by arts organization Skywatchers and residents of the Iroquois Hotel, who showed a film about life inside the SRO and discussed the challenges facing residents. “I’ve got to keep telling my own story or else they won’t pay attention,” said Rachel Wallace, who lives at the Iroquois. “Closed mouths don’t get fed.”
