Good afternoon!

Sad news: Dolores Huerta, the labor organizer and co-founder of United Farm Workers, has died at the age of 96. Andres Jimenez Larios has an obituary.

For back story, read this terrific 2024 interview with Huerta by Lydia Chรกvez โ€”it’s where I learned that the legendary activist was shaped by her years as a Girl Scout.

The city has tapped Steve Adami, a controversial opponent of harm reduction who referred to drug users as ‘zombies’, to lead recovery services at the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. Marina Newman reports that Adami, who has no medical background, was appointed at the behest of Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Proposition D, one of Mayor Lurie’s charter measures, would make it harder to get initiatives on the ballot by raising fourfold the number of signatures needed to qualify. Christina Baris fact-checks claims about Prop. D to see who it would affect.

And Bailey Zitko follows District 10 supervisor candidate J.R. Eppler as he energetically doorknocks in Potrero Hill.

“In my opinion, this is a signal that this administration is not serious.โ€

Prop. D would make it harder to put measures on the ballot. But harder for whom, exactly?

“There wonโ€™t be any more grassroots ballot initiatives โ€” they canโ€™t afford it.”

See how they run: Thereโ€™s a high chance J.R. Eppler is coming to a doorstep near you

“Itโ€™s the work that I want to do. And Iโ€™ll do it in elected office, or Iโ€™ll do it as a volunteer. But I think I’d be a lot more effective in elected office.”
