All it took was a lot of nerve and a kick in the ass.

And, okay, the victim probably shouldn’t have been texting, but then again, who doesn’t text and walk?

The 27-year-old victim was doing just that as she walked home Thursday around 9 p.m. when a suspect – 25 to 30 years old – grabbed her phone at 16th and Shotwell Streets, according to police.

The victim resisted and the 180-pound suspect wrestled her to the ground, succeeded in taking the phone and fled north bound.

The victim ran after him and got close enough to give him a good kick in the behind.  That was enough.  He dropped the phone and the victim recovered it.  She was treated for bruises and abrasions, but is otherwise okay – although probably rattled.

“It’s unusual but not unheard of for victims to fight back,” said police spokesperson Albie Esparza.

No arrests have been made. The suspect was described as 5 ft. 10 inches, 180 pounds with spiked hair.  At the time of the assault he was wearing jeans and a hoodie.

Crime is trauma and the county offers different services. Here is a link to a page of services.

Victims of violent crime can also contact the Trauma Recovery Center at UCSF.

I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

At ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
