Matt Haney gets started early for state senate bid
San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney announced today a list of 52 fellow California Assembly members who endorse his run for the state Senate seat currently held by Sen. Scott Wiener.
The announcement comes less than two weeks before Election Day, and signals Haney’s confidence that Wiener could win the race to succeed Nancy Pelosi in Congress. If Wiener is successful, his departure from the state Senate would create a vacancy before his term ends in 2028. Wiener has endorsed Haney for the Sacramento seat, and Haney has endorsed Wiener for Congress.
Haney’s list of endorsers includes Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, San Francisco Assemblymember Catherine Stefani, Assembly majority leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, and Legislative Progressive Caucus Chair Alex Lee. None of his Republican colleagues in the 80-seat Assembly appears on the list.
Haney currently serves as chair of the Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development.
Haney’s campaign also announced endorsements from several labor organizations, including Teamsters Joint Council 7 and unions representing construction workers, university faculty, nurses and retail workers.
Another candidate for the seat is Christine Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, who is a women’s rights attorney and an elected member of the Democratic National Committee. Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Wiener’s opponent Connie Chan in the congressional race. Christine announced her run for the state Senate seat almost a year ago.
When reached for comment, Pelosi’s campaign did not directly address Haney’s endorsement list. Instead, campaign spokesperson Jason Galisatus emphasized that Pelosi has spent the year meeting residents at over 168 grassroots community events in San Francisco and San Mateo County, supporting 2026 Democratic candidates, and “campaigning with coalitions boosting affordability, safety, healthcare, and transit.”
