For the past three years, Mission Local’s fascinating stranger Benjamin Wachs — it’s on his business card — has been making his way around the Mission’s many drinking establishments for the vicarious pleasure of his readers in the Distillations review series.
From dives to saloons, bowling alleys to karaoke bars, he has tried them all. We mapped all of Wachs’ musings, so now you can discover a new favorite near you.
Click on the circles to find out more about each establishment and to read Wachs’ review.

Jeez, you missed Doc’s Clock too, right down the street from your office. Best dive bar in the Mission. They have great events that benefit animal rescues, and also have a terrific staff. Get a Tecate and a shot. They’ve been there like 15 years, maybe more.
You forgot Asiento! An amazing place on 21st and Bryant. Incredible food and drinks, terrific staff, and just a very cool vibe, even during Covid. They have a beautiful parklet. I’ve been a regular there for years now. Go check it out, you won’t be sorry.
Not sure how many of these places are still around, but Blind Cat is no more.
Hi Adam,
Thanks a lot for pointing this out. I’ve added a note to each of the venues that are now closed.

I believe you missed my bar Asiento. I’ve been here at 21st and Bryant for 10.75 years. We just won Best Brunch and runner up for best burger in 48Hills best of the bay. We’d love to have you stop by and see how we’ve been a neighborhood institution for so many years. Friendly, great cocktails & tapas, and an entertainment license so we host Wednesday night comedy and DJs and live bands. We look forward to meeting you! Debi, owner
