Attention soccer fans! If you’re excited about the Copa America centennial, local business owner and master empanada maker Paula Tejeda is throwing a carrete chileno, or Chilean party, Sunday at 5 p.m. at Slate Bar on 16th Street to celebrate it.
Tejeda has produced both a brand-new empanada (featuring merkén, a kind of chili) and an event featuring Chile’s DJ Julicio, who has made appearances at local venues like the Fox Theater, Brick and Mortar, and the Elbo Room, as well as opening for artists like Bayonics, Calle 13, Ana Tijoux, and GhostFace Killah.
The centennial marks the first time the Copa America is held outside of South America – the series kicked off at Levi’s Stadium on Friday with a Colombia vs. US match (2-0 for Colombia) and continues on Saturday. Slate will show Haiti vs Peru at 4:30 p.m. and Brazil vs Ecuador at 7:00 p.m.
