Earlier, July 16, 2015, 8:47 p.m.

An assailant shot and critically injured a 22-year-old man tonight at 7 p.m. as the victim was standing on Cesar Chavez near Harrison Street, according to police.

Police blocked off Cesar Chavez between Folsom and Harrison Street and were still in the area investigating at 8:30 p.m.

“No one is in custody and there is an active investigation,” said police department spokesperson Officer Albie Esparza.

Esparza added that police were interviewing possible witnesses in the area as well as collecting video footage and other forensic evidence.  He did not know if the shooter was on foot or in a car. One woman in the area said she saw police looking for bullet casings.

We will update as we get more information.
