Foodies looking for a local-made, natural, and seasonal treat: Forget Valencia street. What you’re looking for is Nieves Cinco De Mayo, tucked inside Loma Grocery on 16th and Julian.
The nieves (light, fluffy frozen desserts sort of like a cross between a snow cone and a sorbet) there are made mostly by hand in Fruitvale, where Luis Abundis started the business selling from a cart. He enjoyed enough success to open up a second location in San Francisco, but that location happened to be in the building on Mission and 22nd streets that burned down in late January. Now, the shop has found refuge on 16th street, but are finding that customers they struck a chord with at their former location don’t know they’ve reopened.
