An SF Mime Troupe performer practices for an upcoming show. Video still by Marta Franco

Traditionally, we celebrate our nation’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence with fairs, fireworks and family time. While comforting, these customs can become a bit monotonous when repeated year after year. What better way to commemorate a break with the past than to create new Independence Day traditions? If you plan on being in the Mission on the Fourth of July, here are a few suggestions to shake things up:

1. San Francisco Mime Troupe’s Opening Day in Dolores Park: 2 p.m./Free.  See a video about how the Mime Troupe saved the season.

2. The Bay Bridged’s 8th Annual Big Time Freedom Fest at El Rio (3158 Mission Street): 3 p.m./$8 cover.

3. “Edible Excursions’ Mission District 18th Street Walking Food Tour” on Valencia Street between 17th and 22nd : 6 p.m./$75.

4. The Mission Position (Live Stand-Up Comedy) at Lost Weekend Video (1034 Valencia Street): 8 p.m./$10.
