About half of all crime in San Francisco is now smartphone-related, according to the police department. The Mission is no exception to the increasing prevalence of phone theft.
San Francisco police are urging phone users to be aware of their surroundings when using the devices in public. They are also asking manufacturers to come up with ways to make phones less lucrative to steal.
Mission Local recently asked people in the neighborhood whose fault it is when someone’s smartphone gets swiped in a public place.
If you are going to walk around the Mission with essentially $500 in your hand, you are just an easy target. And if you are looking down at your phone completely unaware of your surroundings you obviously are new to the Mission.
The lowlife criminal who steals.
Don’t blame the victim! Crime is always the fault of the criminal. You steal and you are to blame!
lock up the theives. maybe kick them a few times too.
The fault lies both with the victim and the criminal. “Opportunity makes the thief” as they say. If people were more attentive to whats around them they could avoid bad situations.
Walking around gang territory with multiple hundred dollars of electronics is bad judgment. I’ve lived in the mission for years…never been mugged, no phone stolen, nothing.
Whose fault is it?? How about the person stealing the phone?
The thieves are victims: they were reduced to stealing by inhumane treatment and discrimination. The predominance of Latinos and African Americans among them is the proof.
