San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood is no stranger to language-immersion programs. Tonight, Thomas Edison Charter Academy will screen “Speaking in Tongues,” a documentary film that follows four San Francisco children through their experiences in local language-immersion programs in both Spanish and Chinese.

The film looks at the benefits of language-immersion programs in an increasingly global society, at a time when more than 30 states have passed laws requiring that public education be taught in English.

Tonight’s event takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, 3531 22nd St. A discussion with Juan Flores, an expert in dual-language immersion programs, will follow the screening. The event is free and open to the public.
