A car drove into the Muni tunnel at the Embarcadero on Saturday afternoon, disrupting San Francisco train service and confusing dozens of commuters.

According to Muni Alerts, a car entered the trackway at around 3:46 p.m. SFMTA rerouted trains going downtown, providing bus shuttles for those going towards Caltrain and redirecting the N for those headed towards Ocean Beach.

The mishap surprised passengers and SMTA workers alike.

On Saturday afternoon, hoards of commuters confusedly filed out of the N, going towards Caltrain, after it unexpectedly stopped at Church and Duboce streets.

The driver shouted at the passengers to get out of the train, directing most to an alternative shuttle. “I don’t know what’s going on either,” said the driver, when asked by a frustrated passenger why the line had stopped. “Apparently someone drove in — guess they weren’t paying attention.”

Some who hadn’t yet heard the news waited by the stop, hoping to catch the next bus.

Currently the K,L, and M lines are running service up to Church Station before switching back to westboung service. There is no service between Church and Embarcadero in both directions until further notice.

This is a developing story.
