Families from all over San Francisco gathered at Garfield Square Park early Saturday morning to receive free backpacks filled with school supplies. The event, hosted by Target, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services (MONS) and the Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA), featured live music, yoga classes and children’s activities.
A total of 2,150 backpacks were stuffed by volunteers from MONS and MEDA. One black-and-white backpack filled with pencils, sharpeners and markers was given to every child who attended.
According to Victor Corrales, MEDA project manager, the remaining backpacks will be donated to schools around the Mission.
