From Nov. 14 to 18, Everett Middle School celebrated peace. Staff and students talked about the violence that surrounds them in the Mission and the school’s efforts to curb students from that behavior.

Peace Week is one of many initiatives at the Middle School to promote unity. Others include a peer counselor program and a Gay Straight Alliance.

  1. Can anyone that has children who attend Everett confirm or deny that when Everett added a Charter Schhol to the mix that things began to get a littler rough on campus? I have friends who children attend Everett and the comments from their kids is that violence is running rampant there and it’s good to watch your back.

    1. I don’t have children at Everett but I do have a younger cousin at Everett. Everett is not a Charter School. There was a period of time Everett had no identity. OUr suspension rate and fights have been reduced. Every school has it’s share of problems but I wouldn’t describe it as violence running rampant. The video made it seemed as though Everett violence is bad. Both Ms. Early and Mr. Urbina were talking about violence on the streets and not specifically violence at Everett. On a bad day anyone can take a snap shot and search for negative episodes, even at some of the highest achieving schools in SF. But on a good day, you can see kids engaged, peer mediating, sharing, participating, and eager to learn. The important thing to remember is not to give up on any child. Everett has always embraced it’s students and will continue to find ways to understand all children. WE must remember that all children are different . We celebrate our differences and learn from each other.
