Will be leased for 60 days to a group doing community projects. Then maybe another restaurant.

So it appears that one of Charles Phan’s three vacant spaces on the 500 block of Valencia (584) will be available to lease. The next one down (582) will be rented for 60 days to a group for community projects and later may just turn into another Phan restaurant. But that could take years, said someone who has seen the drawings. None of this could be confirmed by Phan and all came from an unidentified source.

I got some flack for my last report on the Phan spaces when a reader questioned my fawning “much-loved” reference to the Slanted Door that originally lived on Valencia and is now at the Ferry Building. So I’ll fess up: It was much-loved by me because the food was terrific, and while it was impossible to get into for dinner without a reservation, Mission residents could walk over at lunch and easily get seated. Lunch specials were reasonable.

Will be available for lease.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.
