It’s 8:07 a.m., 58 and going up to 81!  Now that’s something to celebrate.

This is the perfect night for MAPP, the neighborhood walkabout for music and art.  It happens every two months and should not be missed because houses that participate come and go.  You can pick up your schedule at the Red Poppy Art House at 23rd and Folsom, or check it out here.

If you want to learn more about the collective creation of MAPP or see what other evenings were like, click here to a profile and earlier audio slideshows.

And don’t forget Summer in the City and Hey Kids, a listing of things for kids of any age and families of any size.

Enjoy the weekend.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.

  1. Hey, isn’t anyone going to cover the raging car battle on Harrison, between 25th and 26th last night? 3 bullets went through a house’s living room window.
