Good afternoon!

A year after the recall of DA Chesa Boudin, violent crime is up under DA Brooke Jenkins, who blamed Boudin for rising crime rates and “chaos” in the city. Experts told Mission Local that, in fact, DAs have little effect on crime rates— but that tough-on-crime rhetoric remains popular with voters.

Tough-on-drugs rhetoric also seems popular: SF officials have been proclaiming “crackdowns” since 2021. Most recently, the city announced that 130 deputy sheriffs will begin arresting people using drugs in public. According to Sheriff Paul Miyamoto, “jail can be a place for compassion and accountability.”

• In further budget battle news, the Mayor’s proposed budget would eliminate programs funded by DBI that advocate for code enforcement and repairs at SRO hotels. DBI says it’s facing a severe budget deficit; tenants in the Mission say without help navigating DBI and pressuring landords for repairs, “we’d be lost.”

Plenty of stuff to do this weekend: don’t miss the Black cowboys on horseback at Saturday’s Juneteenth parade.

More soon,

Sara
