Good afternoon!
Joe Eskanazi reports that Downtown Streets, which runs a homeless work program to clean streets in SF and 20 other cities, has received at least $2.17 million in SF contracts since 2017. But the city’s Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement says the program depends on mostly unpaid “volunteers” who should be treated as employees, and are owed back pay.
DPW workers, meanwhile, say that they’re being threatened and harassed as they try to deal with unpermitted vending at the 24th Street BART plaza. โWeโve had inspectors being punched before, cans thrown at us, you name it,โ said a worker.
DA Brooke Jenkins has dismissed the last case against a police officer filed by her predecessor Chesa Boudin: a homicide case against officer Kenneth Cha for the shooting of Sean Moore in 2017. โIโm very angry, Iโm beyond angry,โ said Moore’s brother.
And a reminder: it’s that time of year for coyotes. Find out what to do when you meet one on your next walk.
More soon,
Sara
