The driver of a car that shut down the Muni Metro subway tunnel under Market Street on Saturday evening had abandoned the vehicle inside the tunnel after driving into it, the San Francisco Police Department said.

SFPD said that officers arrived to the mouth of the tunnel at Folsom and Embarcadero streets at 3:46 p.m. on Saturday. There, they “located a vehicle inside the tunnel that caused damage to city property. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.”

The department conducted “a hit and run investigation,” it said, and the car was “removed from the tunnel and towed from the scene.”

Service was disrupted for the rest of Saturday evening but resumed on Sunday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency posted at 9:20 a.m.
