Update: Deon Jackson, 49, was arrested just after 8 a.m. on the morning of the shooting, and was charged with murder on Dec. 4, according to a statement from the District Attorney’s office. He pleaded not guilty to various charges including murder, robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of an assault weapon.

Three men converged outside a black SUV in the Tenderloin on Tuesday morning, one firing what appears to be a rifle or shotgun into the vehicle, according to video reviewed by Mission Local.

The incident, which left one man dead inside the car early this morning, occurred outside the Helen Hotel at 166 Turk St.

The shooting happened at 5:53 a.m., according to video footage. A couple of minutes prior, a man was seen at the curb leaning over the parked car, which appears to be a dark Nissan Juke SUV, talking through the window to whoever is inside.

Soon, a second man arrives on a scooter, and a third emerges from the hotel carrying a large duffel-like bag.

Moments later, the third man pulls a long gun out of the bag and opens the Nissan’s passenger door to apparently fire into the car. The other two men walk away quickly, while the shooter goes back into the hotel. A moment later, the shooter appears to reach out of the hotel to retrieve the bag.

During the sudden commotion, the victim’s driver’s-side door can be seen opening, then closing. The driver attempts to pull away, but crashes into the car in front of the Nissan, and stops. A minute later, an arm reaches out of the car to close the passenger door.

Police did not arrive for nearly 20 minutes. Before officers arrived on the scene, the two men returned repeatedly, looking inside the car, retrieving something and taking the scooter away.

Both the Nissan and the man on the scooter appear to have been in the vicinity long before the shooting: Earlier footage from around 3 a.m. shows a man dressed like him gathered with others near a white BMW SUV that was parked several feet behind the Nissan.

Five minutes after the shooting, when one of the three men had left the car door open, an arm from inside the SUV reached out to shut it again.

According to city records, a 911 call came in at 6:06 a.m., about 13 minutes after the shooting.

In a statement, a San Francisco police spokesperson said officers responded to the scene at 6:12 a.m. Video footage shows two officers arrive on foot and peer into the vehicle, before medics arrive minutes later. The victim was declared dead at the scene, according to a police statement.

No arrests have been announced, and police are investigating the shooting as a homicide. The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed by the medical examiner’s office.

Further down Turk Street on Tuesday, many people were sitting or sleeping along the side of the Taylor Street Center, but none had seen the incident.

The shooting comes two days after a fatal shooting in SoMa. It brings the number of homicides in the city up to 28. Overall, homicides are decreasing in San Francisco; at this point last year, there were 33 homicides

    1. It’s a block and a half from tl station. There are usually about 40 sfpd vehicles parked on Jones and Eddy, often double parked and parked in the crosswalk at the SW corner and blocking the fire hydrant. From the looks of it, tl station far from understaffed . If they are in fact understaffed, then they should at least get rid of the dozens of cars that don’t have anyone to drive them.

  1. Wow !

    Great coverage, Eleni.

You did their investigation for them.

With all of the video cams in the area any reasonably competent force would have the suspects ID’d inside of a Trump 24 hours.

Wanna know why they were that late ?

Cause their recruiting practices over the years have given us a department rife with cowards and bullies.

When I was a firefighter the insurance companies charged customers in various locales depending in part how fast their department responded to a call with best response times(3 or 4 minutes) paying lowest premiums.

We practiced and practiced and studied street maps and took tests and drove by and visited regularly the most probable structures.

We heed an elected Chief to begin the long road to minimal and honest such numbers for SFPD.

It ain’t happening under Lurie so far cause he’s not one of us (resident of high crime area) and doesn’t realize how far out of touch a precinct like Mission is from the people.

His ‘acting’ chief, Yepp made it worse in D-9 by turning the clock back by removing a female local native who was beginning to work with us by having the monthly community meetings out in public settings and giving us a knuckle-dragger who moved them back into the station.

    go Niners !!
