San Francisco has 130 miles of “unaccepted” streets that the city takes no responsibility for—and a quarter of those are in Bayview. The abandoned, torn-up roads are magnets for fires and massive illegal dumping, and residents have to pay for repairs and maintenance themselves. At a town hall in the Castro, police and city officials advocated for a tough-on-crime approach: more conservatorships, more of a crackdown on drugs, and a focus on breaking up crowds. DA Brooke Jenkins blamed current problems on her predecessor, Chesa Boudin.
