Two men were stabbed in separate incidents in SoMa this week, including one attack outside a homeless shelter and another aboard a Muni bus, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
The first stabbing occurred around 8 a.m. Monday at Eighth and Howard streets, in front of The Sanctuary homeless shelter. San Francisco police said officers found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said a verbal argument between the victim and another man turned physical before the suspect stabbed the victim several times. The suspect then fled north on Eighth Street on a bicycle. No arrest has been made.
On Wednesday, at about 1:41 p.m., police responded to 10th and Mission streets after a man was stabbed on a Muni bus. Paramedics took the victim, who had life-threatening injuries, to a hospital.
Police searched the area and arrested Glenn Hopkins, 44, of San Francisco, according to SFPD; jail booking logs show he was booked at 7:47 p.m. that evening. Hopkins was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, as well as an outstanding warrant from another county.
Police said both cases remain under investigation.
Police have not said whether either attack was random or whether the victims knew their alleged attackers. Asked if there was any connection between the two cases, SFPD Public Information Officer Allison Maxie wrote by email, “Determining whether or not any two incidents are related is a standard part of any investigation.”
Police have not provided updates on the conditions of either victim.
Both incidents occurred in the Southern Police District, which has historically struggled with staffing, and slow response times for lower-priority calls, which officers have attributed to “back to back” high priority calls, particularly around the Sixth Street corridor. Southern Station Capt. Carla Hurley wrote in an email Wednesday that the station would receive six additional officers beginning Saturday.
