With San Franciscoโs seasons in flux, as grass begins to change from brown to browner and the weather becomes idiosyncratically warmer, community engagement in Bayview-Hunters Point is still keeping steady.
Music, local collaborations and a little bit of nostalgia are a thread in recent happenings around the neighborhood.
This Saturday, Sept. 26th, resident-led Bayview 3rd Community Events is hosting a happy hour cleanup. Volunteers will meet at Gratta Winery and Lounge at 5273 Third St., and then clean around the neighborhood from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Stick around afterward for free food and refreshments.
Earlier this month, the corridor welcomed another business City Mini Mart at 4342 Third St., which will offer chips, soda and possibly produce, according to an employee.
This opening is one of many to come in Bayview, along with the nine businesses that were awarded Storefront Opportunity Grants by the cityโs Office of Economic & Workforce Development earlier this year.
On Oct. 4, Yvonneโs Southern Sweets will celebrate 20 years of serving the Bayview. Earlier this month, the business reopened its doors after being closed since February. The celebration will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the bakery at 5128 Third St. Light refreshments will be offered until 2 p.m., and you can buy sweet potato pie, Mamaโs 7up cupcakes and old school butter cookies to take home.
The art gallery tucked inside Building Resources of San Francisco, a nonprofit that minimizes waste by giving reusable building materials another life, will be saying farewell to the exhibit of its current artist-in-residence, Rey Guerrero, on Sept. 25.
The gallery, at 701 Amador St., serves as an opportunity for artists to showcase their work for a month at a time. It will welcome its next resident, Xan Blood Walker, with an opening reception from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. Blood Walkerโs opening will also feature hand-printed clothing made by artist Barry Barbour-Duncan. The exhibit will run through Oct. 18, when a closing reception will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The gallery, said Larry Winum, an employee at Building Resources, is โa community engagement-type thing, and an attraction to get people to come in. The artist invites all his friends and family, and we benefit by them learning about us.โ
Not long after Winumm and Blood Walker met, they had a nostalgic conversation about the 1980s punk scene and decided to plan a punk show together. Luckily, both community punk shows and Building Resources have DIY in common.
On Oct.10, four different Bay Area punk bands will play at Building Resources on the cement stage from noon to 3 p.m. All ages are welcome to savor the tunes of the featured bands: Bite, Middle Aged Queers, Hammerbombs and Lokeigh.
After two months off, the Southeast Community Centerโs indoor family movie club is back and will be screening โMoanaโ at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1550 Evans Ave. Doors will be open from 11:50 a.m. to 4 p.m.
They say good things come in three, and Night Garden on Third is bringing a three-part music event to the corridor in October
The free event runs Friday, Oct. 2 through Sunday, Oct. 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each night, bringing the melodies of afrobeats, jazz and soul to the Peopleโs Garden green space at 4101 Third St. Bayview native Martin Luther McCoy will host the event, and the weekend will feature live music by Jazz Mafia and Horns in the Hood, and DJ POS Red on vinyl.
The same weekend also marks the return of the fifth annual Afro-Latinx Concert at the Ruth Williams Opera House on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The all-ages event will be hosted by Gina Madrid, featuring live hip-hop, reggae and cumbia from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Bay Area.
