Terribly sad news for the neighborhood: My Tofu House at 4627 Geary Blvd. near 11th Avenue, has closed, after 25 years. This reporter will miss dearly the restaurant’s soft tofu soup and banchan side dishes.

“We are deeply grateful for your loyalty and for making us a part of your lives,” a sign on the door read.

A new school year has begun, and should you ever think of starting your own, the former home of The Stratford School at 645 14th Ave,  on the corner with Balboa Street, is looking for new tenants. The Stratford School, which was known for its Mandarin immersion program, is one of a group of “school brands” owned by Spring Education Group, which is itself owned by multi-national investment group Primavera Holdings Ltd. The Richmond location shuttered this spring despite an effort last year by parents to stop it from closing.

So, if you’re looking into taking over a building zoned for a school (or office, or “creative,” according to the broker’s sign out front), here’s your chance.

MNT Studio, a pilates gym and self-described “wellness social club,” is coming to 35 Clement Street near Second Avenue in October, according to signs posted out front. MNT has a number of locations across the Bay Area, including one in the Marina, and is also opening an outpost in Mission Rock soon.

At 701 Clement Street on the corner with Eighth Avenue, a new business appears to be opening. Formerly home to The APM, a boutique that sold clothes from Dongdaemun wholesale market in South Korea, the storefront recently saw new  signs installed reading  “Solo Show.” Chinese letters on the signs beside its English name read “trendy women’s clothing,” according to Mission Local’s Xueer Lu. A new business, “Golden Lu LLC,” was registered at that address in late June.

The fine folks at Fuwa Dumpling on 3608 Balboa St., known for, well, their dumplings,  will be taking a short, but much-deserved vacation on Aug. 29, and are set to reopen Sept. 2 — plan accordingly.

In that time, it will be a quiet few days for that stretch of Balboa Street, since Pho Kim Son, on the same block, has been shuttered since July.

At the 4 Star Theater on Aug. 30, the obsolete media enthusiasts behind Basement VHS will hold their annual all-day festival in celebration of the format, featuring a movie marathon and various vendors of clothes and cassettes.

As always, check out Cinema SF’s programming for all your boutique theater and live indie music venue needs.
