Five people were sent to local hospitals and 12 displaced from their apartments on Saturday after a one-alarm fire struck a four-story Mission District apartment building. The fire likely started from a scooter, a fire department spokesperson said.
San Francisco fire fighters were called out to 1825 Mission St., a 126-unit building near 15th Street and across from the Armory, after a fire started at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Captain Mariano Elias said.
While the fire, which appeared to have started in one unit on the fourth floor, was put out without incident, the subsequent rescue took time, Elias said. Many seniors live in the building, and “a lot of people had to be escorted and/or rescued from the building,” he said.
“It took time and resources to assist the elderly.”
The Red Cross and Human Services Agency were on the scene, Elias said, along with a Muni bus that sheltered residents during the fire. The Human Services agency will provide a week of hotel stays for nine households in units affected by fire or water damage, Elias said; others were able to return to their homes.
Five people were transported to various hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately clear.
