San Francisco firefighters had put out a fire in a six-story apartment building in the Tenderloin Sunday afternoon as of 1:54 p.m.
The fire reached two alarms, and residents of 424 Jones St. had been evacuated, according to San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Mariano Elias.
The fire spread to multiple floors, leaving several apartments damaged, Elias said. Three people were being medically evaluated for smoke inhalation.
Elias said there is no estimate on how many residents will be displaced.
The fire started around 11:39 a.m. on the building’s first floor, according Elias. The fire started in the light shaft, which allows lights into kitchen and bathrooms. Elias said that is why the fire spread to multiple floors.
Video posted by the fire department showed two engines on Jones Street, several firefighters, and a ladder reaching up to higher floors. Smoke billowed out of the building’s main entrance.
The Red Cross is on the scene, helping displaced residents, according to Elias.
One would think DBI would even issue a Notice of Violation as the formerly 24/7 365 on call emergency 10%? extra paid DBI Building inspector would be be issuing the Notice of Violation, even if the district assigned building inspector did not issue the Notice of Violation with the fire and damaged to building that occurred during the district inspectors field hours. New policy by recently retired Director PO to help eliminate Notice’s of Violation, therefore less quagmires/costs for the owners and restoration contractors efficiency under chief of Code Enforcement MH and connected city family while displacing tenants to increase monthly rental fees. If DBI will not do anything maybe the rent board or THC can. It’s all a continuing game at DBI. Hopefully the mayor can fix the systemic problems that have plagued DBI for the past 3 decades. $400,000 dollars a year for a director with no educational requirements but says he has a “North Star” to lead this department. I have an orange bridge to sell. Maybe the newly appointed educated interim director can implement changes in this department. He seems sincere from what I am told.
