Two people were found dead on San Francisco streets Wednesday morning within an hour of each other.
At around 5:31 a.m. police officers responded to a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian near Brannan and Seventh streets in SoMa and found a person lying on the ground.
“Paramedics arrived on scene to render aid to the victim. Despite the lifesaving efforts of the emergency responders, the victim was declared deceased at the scene,” read a statement from the police department.
The driver involved in the collision remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, the department said.
Nearly an hour later, at 6:23 a.m., police officers arrived at the area near Geneva Avenue and Mission Street in the Excelsior, where paramedics had responded to a person deceased in the street.
Police officers had not yet determined a cause of death for the person in the second incident. It is unclear if that person was struck by a car or not.
The SoMa victim is the 11th traffic-related fatality in San Francisco so far this year, and the second within 10 days — a person was hit and killed by a vehicle near 16th and Mission streets on May 25. All but one of those deaths have been pedestrians, with one person riding a powered stand-up device.
“Our hearts break for the victims and their loved ones,” said Jodie Medeiros, executive director for Walk San Francisco, in a statement shared with Mission Local. “People are dying simply walking in our city.”
Officers are still on scene investigating. All information is preliminary. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
