Two people were found dead on San Francisco streets Wednesday morning within an hour of each other.

At 5:31 a.m., police officers responded to a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian near Brannan and Seventh streets in SoMa, and found a person lying on the ground.

“Paramedics arrived on scene to render aid to the victim. Despite the life-saving efforts of the emergency responders, the victim was declared deceased at the scene,” read a statement from the police department.

The driver involved in the collision remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, the department said.

Nearly an hour later, at 6:23 a.m., police officers arrived at the area near Geneva Avenue and Mission Street in the Excelsior, where paramedics had responded to reports of a person deceased in the street.

Police officers had not yet determined a cause of death for the person in the second incident. It is unclear if that person was struck by a car.

The SoMa victim is the 11th  traffic-related fatality in San Francisco so far this year, and the second within 10 days. A person was hit and killed by a vehicle near 16th and Mission streets on May 25. All but one of those deaths have been pedestrians, with one person riding a powered stand-up device.

“Our hearts break for the victims and their loved ones,” said Jodie Medeiros, executive director for Walk San Francisco, in a statement shared with Mission Local. “People are dying simply walking in our city.”

Officers are still on scene investigating. All information is preliminary. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.

  1. With all of the safety provisions historically in place, new provisions implemented monthly (it seems)… most of these dont really work, they are justifications of fault not safety precautions. Because it comes down to “PAYING ATTENTION TO YOUR ENVIRONMENT”…. Some pedestrians wish to get hit, because our city is flooded with PREDATORY INJURY LAWYER BILLBOARDS … which should be outlawed!!
In my opinion, based off my observations and experiences, its time to take away the state law giving pedestrians “the right of way” !!! We tried it, they had their chance, it still doesn’t work, because drivers and pedestrians are both distracted, NOT limited to devices. Speedbumps should be at the painted crosswalks not mid block, and they only work if you know its there. Daylighting only encourages drivers to NOT even slow down now. We live on a corner by a school, trust….it doesn’t work. Then they painted some other provisions around it…which I’m yet to understand, and the 1 of 2 on our block was painted incorrectly!!! Anyone going out to check their work? Many other provisions were removed after they caused more problems. Y’all getting a tax return from those? Nope…the city just doubles down on fines and quick money grabs. In other countries its Illegal to cross the street while holding a phone, but here its illegal while driving, although ALL new cars have a tablet built into the dash!! It should be illegal to cross the street with headphones in, looking at your phone expecting the world will stop for them. Being drunk, both walking and driving is an issue. So again, if your drunk you can’t even operate yourself properly. Ive always said, even if its not your fault, its always your fault because its your responsibility for your own safety not some paint on the ground or a law! Be safe, the world is out to get you!!

    1. Now that the police are harassing every person they see riding a scooter on the sidewalk, way more people have started taking their chances in the roadway. I myself have been stopped, handcuffed, searched, warrant checked, and scooter serial number checked for riding on an empty sidewalk wearing a hoodie. Now I mostly take my chances in the roadway too, even though I’ve had several very near misses. It’s gotten seriously out of hand.
