Two people in a purportedly stolen car crashed while attempting to flee a traffic stop at 24th Street and South Van Ness Avenue on Friday evening.

At around 7:44 p.m., police officers were notified of a stolen vehicle, according to a spokesperson from the police department. Soon after, they attempted to make a traffic stop at 24th and Capp streets. The car then fled and crashed into another car in front of the Napper Tandy bar, just one block away.

A video obtained via the Citizen app showed two cars with extensive damage to the front of one car and lighter damage to the bumper of the other.

The two suspects fled from the collision site, and the police officers pursued them on foot. Both suspects were taken into custody.

One person who was in the vehicle that collided with the stolen car sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to a spokesperson from the police department.

This is not the first collision at the 24th Street and South Van Ness Avenue intersection. In February, an SUV crashed into the Napper Tandy parklet during a police chase, injuring six people.

  1. Corner businesses really take a beating from crappy drivers- it looks like the appliance repair and sales store at Bryant and Cesar Chavez, Rancho Grande Appliances, also took a hit sometime over the weekend. The front entrance is boarded up and there was broken vehicle glass all over the sidewalk on Sunday morning. It’s a great business and the folks there are super nice- I really hope this doesn’t affect them too badly.

  2. “Both suspects were taken into custody.”

I’m curious how you’ve already determined that the two people the police ultimately detained, after a foot pursuit, were actually the two people who fled from the stolen car. Also, since being a passenger in a stolen car isn’t necessarily a crime, I wonder why you refer to them both as “suspects.”

  3. At The Napper Tapper, community runs deep. It’s the kind of place where people from all walks of life come together — cheering for their favorite teams, sharing laughs over legendary trivia nights, and making memories that turn strangers into friends. It’s more than a bar — it’s a gathering place for the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the business and the community that surrounds it have suffered repeated damage from multiple car crashes caused by reckless individuals fleeing from crimes. These incidents have caused not only physical destruction, but emotional and financial strain on a local establishment that brings so many people together.

The people responsible for these crashes need to be held accountable. Small businesses like The Napper Tapper deserve protection, not punishment for the actions of criminals. It’s time for real accountability — and for all of us to continue showing up to support the places that make our neighborhood feel like home.

  4. To Jack Hernandez,

You don’t have to wait for Fielder to blame it on the cops cause I will cause in one case on video they watched burglars get into their getaway car and did not pursue.

Now, for a stolen car they pursue and cause yet another accident.

Recall when one of the cops from Faitagate crashed his car rushing to a high profile arrest and killed his gay Sworn partner ?

Again, as I recall, it was the overkill of SFPD chases and tactics and the like and it even got to the ballot for them to put the pedal to the metal, but anyway I also remember that it was this issue that got Max Overstone tossed off of the Police Commission.

We need an elected Police Chief with the necessary powers to hire and fire and suspend without pay to get this department in order.

In the meantime we should request that if the President is going to send troops here that he have them wear their dress uniforms with sidearms and billy clubs and go and knock on the door of victims of crimes to tell them that they are loved and protected.

    Let’s see SFPD do that.

    go Niners !!

    h.

    1. The article says nothing a bout a pursuit. It says the officers tried to effect a traffic stop and the car fled. Not sure how you get to “pursuit” from that description.

If you’re assuming the police are lying, I agree with you there. It just wasn’t clear to me whether that’s what you were doing . . .

And, yes I wrote the description of the piece and I welcome critics.

    Like a cat welcomes mice.

    lol

here’s the link to the ad that was first posted as you see it from the screen shot I’m linking to now but later in the day they stripped their promotion of everything I wrote at their insistence, “could you do a couple of more lines?”

  6. Can’t wait for Jackie Fielder to blame this on the police chasing. That is if she has time in between all her tweeting about ICE to care about her district.
