A man was shot and killed around 1:40 p.m. on Friday at 20th and Mission streets, near the El Capitan Hotel, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

The department said that officers arrived on the scene and located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. After life-saving efforts by first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim, who was in his 20s, was shot on the streets outside of the Modern Hair Cuts barbershop, and ran into the shop asking for help. Once inside, he collapsed and was never revived. The bullet went through his chest, the witness said.

It was the victim’s first day working at the barbershop — but he worked for only about four hours before the shooting happened, according to a nearby witness. Workers at the barbershop declined to confirm whether the victim had just started work there.

“I left to buy my lunch, when I came back, that happened,” said Jason, who did not know the victim, but chatted with him briefly that afternoon.

After the shooting, the body, covered with a yellow tarp, lay inside barbershop at 2359 Mission St. Police officers photographed the scene and marked out evidence. Mission Street was shut down between 20th and 21st to northbound traffic.

The one witness who spoke said the shooter was in a white car when he fired the shots and then fled. The shooter had been lingering in the streets for a while and “eyeing [the victim] from inside the car,” the witness said.

No arrests have been made at this time. The killing is the ninth homicide this year, according to SFPD data, and the first in the Mission District.

A nearby witness said he heard a loud gunshot at around 1:30 p.m. Workers at the Dragon City Bakery on the block did not hear the gunshot, as their baking machine was operating. When they heard that someone was shot, a worker put her hand on her chest, “It’s so scary,” she said in Mandarin.

Don Klaiber and Maisie Wong, at the A.C. Trading Co. across the street, did hear the gunshot. “The sound was so loud,” Klaiber said.

Klaiber figured someone was killed because “they had the paramedics here, but they don’t have anyone in the gurney,” he said.

Nisha Patel, who works at the front desk of the El Capitan Hotel, said most residents at the hotel work in the afternoon, and she wasn’t sure how many people were inside the hotel when the shooting happened.

At 3:52 p.m., an investigator with the medical examiner’s office wheeled the victim’s body out under a white sheet, loading the deceased man into a white van.

This is a breaking story and will be updated as possible.

    1. Is it too complex to blame the man AND the gun? Waiting to hear more, there may be more blame to go around.
