Lowriders will cruise through the Mission on Saturday to honor Selena, the “queen of Tejano music,” who was murdered in 1995 at age 23.
The event, hosted by San Francisco Lowrider Council, a Bay Area organization for lowrider clubs and solo riders, is set to kick off at 4 p.m. on Mission Street between Cesar Chavez and 24th streets. The council noted in their promotional post that the event is family-friendly.
The route of the cruise is unknown but, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, it is expected to cover Mission Street between 20th and 26th streets.Â

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, known simply as Selena, was a Mexican-American Grammy-winning singer and artist. She was often credited for boosting the Tejano genre into the mainstream music market with hits such as “Como La Flor,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “No Me Queda Mas.” Selena was also often called “Tejano Madonna” for her fashion choices.
Her fifth and last posthumous album, “Dreaming of You,” was released in July 1995, less than four months after she was murdered by her fan club president and boutiques manager, Yolanda SaldÃvar.
The Saturday lowrider cruise is scheduled to start immediately after the annual La Bendicion (the blessing of the cars), which is a Lowrider Council event that goes from 1 to 4 p.m. at the 24th St. BART Plaza. This year’s La Bendicion will pay special tribute to Miguel Martinez, the captain of the Xiuhcoatl Danza Azteca and a giant in the Mission community, who died at 68 in 2023.
Muni will be rerouted on Saturday, starting at 3:30 p.m. for six lines, including the 14-Mission, 14R-Mission Rapid, 27-Bryant, 48-Quintara/24th Street, 49-Van Ness/Mission, and 67-Bernal Heights. The 12-Folsom/Pacific Muni lines may experience minor delays crossing Mission Street. More service change details can be found on the SFMTA website.
The annual La Bendicion and Selena tribute cruise are just the first of this year’s events from the San Francisco Lowrider Council, followed by the Cinco de Mayo Show and Cruise on May 11 and Carnaval San Francisco on May 25 and 26.
You can find more information on the Lowrider Council’s events on the organization’s Instagram page.
