24 Hour Comics Day

Mission Comics is hosting a 24-hour comic-drawing competition from Saturday at 11 a.m. to Sunday at 11 a.m. The sold-out competition is free to watch, and challenges artists to illustrate their own comic book from start to finish. That means drawing the panels and scenes, coming up with dialogue and coloring it all in. More info at the event page.

Upcoming: Balmy Alley Block Party

Local muralist Lucia Ippolito is set to unveil the newest mural on Balmy Alley. Titled “Women of the Resistance,” the mural depicts women activists from different eras and different parts of the world. Her latest venture is raising money for an all-day block party on Saturday, Oct. 13.  When Mission Local talked with Ippolito in July, she said that her original idea came from watching national politics unfold.

“We’re all angry right now. So we decided to represent the faces of the women fighting for the cause,” she said then.

A GoFundMe, launched in September with the goal of raising $3,500 for a block party, has so far has raised $3,550. The block party will start at 2 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
