Sunday Streets, which launched in 2008 under Mayor Gavin Newsom, took inspiration from Bogota’s Ciclovia — a weekly event where streets are closed to vehicles around the city and made accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. The results are more neighborhood events and create “a greater sense of community,” says Livable City’s Katy Birnbaum. The non-profit organizes the event and is adding a new route along Folsom Street in SOMA for its August event.
