Francisco Marquez, owner, The Zapato on Mission Street.

Zapato sells imported shoes from Mexico. “A year ago, it was better,” said Marquez of the five-year-old business that moved two years ago to its present location at 2435 Mission St., in the Plaza del Sol.

Like many merchants on Mission, he blames a drop in business to the new Muni lanes.

“It’s harder for customers to park,” he said, adding that business is recovering.

Most of his clients come from the Mission and, among women, heels and boots are most popular.

If heels sound uncomfortable, he says that’s not the case. Heels are made much better and are more easily worn, he said.

Men, however, stick with casual tennis shoes.
