A jury has found a 39-year-old man guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious person, the District Attorney announced today.

The assault took place at the defendant’s apartment near 22nd Street, after the two met at Revolution Café at 9 p.m. on April 14 along with two others. The group left after the café closed at midnight and went to the defendant’s apartment half a block away, where the victim lost consciousness, according to a statement from the District Attorney’s office. She awoke “face down with the Defendant assaulting her,” and found that the acquaintance and girlfriend had left the apartment.

The victim was reportedly traumatized and encouraged by friends to report the assault. The San Francisco Crime Lab, which analyzed the DNA taken from the victim’s medical exam at San Francisco General Hospital, verified that the victim’s underwear contained DNA belonging to both the victim and the defendant. The defendant was arrested on April 20.

The Office of the District Attorney credited the “successful prosecution” to SFPD Sgt. Esther Gonzalez, Paralegal Nina Stellini, Victim Advocates Lili Garnero and Gretel Chuquipul, Law Clerk Ryan Porter, and Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai.
