David Tim, Which Way? 2016. Mixed media, 22 x 36 in. $1,500.

The incredibly talented David Tim, who we first wrote about in 2014, has a collection of six mixed media pieces at the Campfire Gallery at 3344 24th St. Most use woodcuts, charcoal, acrylic and fabric on handmade Sekishu paper.

In the artist statement on his website, Tim writes “My work represents the pursuit of harmony between the individual and the community.”  For the most part, the works at Campfire explore those relationships as well as the sheer exuberance and difficulty of being young and striking out on one’s own.

Tim, who is from Canada,  received his M.A. in Fine Art in 2015 from the San Francisco Art Institute.  This show is up until November 9th and definitely worth visiting.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.
