Herbivore, the “Earthly Grill” vegan restaurant that has been on Valencia Street since 1997, is closing its doors on Tuesday, August 23. That comes days after the Berkeley store closed its doors and almost a year after it closed its other San Francisco store on Divisadero.

Workers in the restaurant at 983 Valencia St. near 21st Street said they did not want to speak on the matter, but said the store would be closed and empty on Tuesday. Restaurant owners did not returns requests for comment.

Its Divisadero location was closed in May 2015 after a health code violation for vermin, according to SFist, though it reopened after a few days. The Valencia Street location does not have any recent violations, according to the Department of Public Health, and it was not clear why the restaurant was shutting its doors.

Herbivore was one of the few vegan restaurants in the Mission District, alongside Gracias Madre on Mission Street, Indochine on 16th Street, and a handful of others. It was also one of the longest-running, serving affordable fare in the neighborhood for almost two decades.

  1. Herbivore was one of our absolute favorite restaurants. Their wide variety of food was mouth watering delicious! Whenever our meat eating friends or family came to visit us, this was one of the restaurants we would take them to… they ALL loved the food and asked to return there when they came back again to visit. We have been frequenting the establishment since they opened and were totally bummed when we showed up to find them closed:( SO disappointed!

  2. ??????i was working there for 9 years i love the food there …. pero todo tiene un final Extraniare mis conpanieras de trabajo. Al pollo torres al chef mario .he make the soup sooo good. ?????

  3. Sorry to hear they’ve closed. I’ve been going to their restaurants in San Francisco since the 90s.

  4. I am not surprised. The Berkeley location served food that just wasn’t very good. VEgans have many other choices, so simply offering a vegan menu is not enough.
