City officials are encouraging travelers to be find alternative means of transportation this Labor Day weekend, as both BART and MUNI face closures.
BART’s transbay tube will be shut down from midnight on Friday until Tuesday morning, with no service between the East Bay and San Francisco throughout the Labor Day weekend. The West Oakland Station will also be closed, and travelers will be able to use a lifeline bus service between the 19th St. station and a Temporary Transbay Terminal two blocks from the Embarcadero station, but officials say the bus is meant only for those with no other options and will delay the community by 30 minutes to an hour. There is no extra charge for the bus.
The closures are due to repair of a “critical section” of the transbay tube. BART service within the East Bay and San Francisco will be more frequent over the weekend, and officials say the San Francisco Bay Ferry and AC Transit can also take people across the bay.
MUNI is continuing subway repairs it began in July, which will disrupt some service nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. until January. At 4th and King, construction on the Central Subway will begin Friday and last throughout the weekend.
Officials expect the disruptions to be worst in the Embarcadero, SoMa, Mission Bay, and downtown.
There will also be a Billy Joel concert at AT&T Park, which is expected to add to the mayhem.
