Lou Dematteis, United Farmworkers President Cesar Chavez with his mother at a Gallo Wine boycott rally.

It’s hard to know how to honor Cesar Chavez, who was born 88 years ago today. So many people walking around the Mission are too young to know the history of the founder of the United Farmworkers of America, and even fewer realize that – as Roberto Ariel Vargas tells us in this video – Chavez spent time in the Mission District.

For those of you who don’t know much about Cesar Chavez, here’s a short bio with some lovely historical footage and audio.

Here’s also a link to a profile that Peter Peter Matthiessen wrote for the New Yorker in 1969.
