Hundreds of thousands of Bay Area residents and tourists danced, ate and danced again on Saturday and Sunday’s 36th annual Carnaval festival and parade.

“I like Carnaval because it brings everyone out of the woodwork,” said Esmerelda Padilla who grew up in the Mission and makes handprinted apparel with Javier Martinez at Zia SF. There’s nothing pretentious or hipster about it. It’s a little microcosm. It still has the same flavor even though the city is changing.”
