Health officials announced recently that a case of West Nile virus discovered in a human was acquired in the Bay Area.

The adult male victim, who is recovering at his home, has not traveled out of the Bay Area recently. This is the first locally acquired case of West Nile in San Francisco since 2005, when the virus first became reportable, according to a release from the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

One dead bird found in San Francisco tested positive for West Nile, indicating that the virus is present in the area.
