If approved by the city, the building at 1544 will become an artisanal desserts shop

If all goes according to plan, a dessert shop called Sixth Course will open this year just across the street from Marshall Elementary School, at 1544 15th St.

The owners, Bridget Labus and Gianina Serrano, both have a history of working for five-star hotels. Labus was formerly the executive pastry chef at the Four Seasons and St. Regis hotels, while Serrano, who has also worked at luxury hotels, has most recently acted as a consultant to restaurant startups, according to the company’s website.

Sixth Course currently sells its artisan desserts at Rainbow Grocery and Avedano’s market in Bernal Heights.

According to Phillip Lesser of the Mission Merchants Association, who is helping Labus and Serrano navigate the permitting bureaucracy, this is a block “that’s going through quite a transition.” Construction for a 40-unit mixed-use building at the corner of 15th and South Van Ness was approved by the city last year. At the other end of the block, a 202-unit housing complex is under construction at 15th and Mission Streets.
