According to an event press release, Bay Area residents will observe the United Nations’ annual International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26.

Organizers have scheduled a press conference on Friday at noon in the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts at 2868 Mission St., where community leaders will speak about violence against women.

Saturday’s event will take place at Dance Mission Theater, 3316 24th St., and will feature Latin music, dance, art and poetry.

The UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was established in 1999.

This event is co-sponsored by the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology of Palo Alto.

A swap meet aficionado, the Mission’s outdoor markets and Latino community remind Alicia of her family’s weekly swap meet outings at home, in southeast Los Angeles, where she is always on the lookout for hidden treasures.
