Maverick restaurant manager and sommelier Andrew Dombrowski was so affected by the murder of Gaspar Puch-tzek, a line cook at Maverick’s sister restaurant Hog & Rocks, that he’s organizing a benefit to help raise money for funeral costs. Puch-tzek was out smoking a cigarette with two co-workers when two suspects approached them, asked what gang he claimed, and although Puch-tzek said he wasn’t a gang member, one of the suspect shot him in the face. Puch-tzek died last Wednesday.

A silent auction and a benefit will be held on Sept. 17 at Hog & Rocks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tonight is the opening of the San Francisco Shorts Film Festival at the Roxie. With so many shorts to watch, it’s hard choosing with screening to go to. In case you want to see them all, an all-screening pass costs $40.

And also worth checking out, Rohina Malik’s Unveiled at the Brava Theater. In her show, the Chicago-based playwright, actress and solo performance artist plays five Muslim women in a post-9/11 world living in western cultures.
