Beautiful leaves on Guerrero

It’s 6:35 a.m., 57° and headed to a balmy 66°. Can summer be arriving? Don’t get your hopes up. Details are here. It appears we get a brief warm spell tomorrow when it heats up to 73°.

Rumblings of more protests from BART officials, so you might try walking home if you work downtown and leave around 5 p.m. Protests earlier this month shut down BART for at least two hours.

The San Francisco Chronicle writes today about Anonymous, the hacking group behind the protests. The group says it will continue until BART officials acknowledge they did SF wrong by cutting off cellphone service at four stations on August 11 to avert a planned protest. How do we know BART’s made amends? It fires Linton Johnson, a BART spokesman, writes the Chronicle.

For this week’s segment of 60 Seconds, Mission Loc@l asked residents about BART’s decision to cut off cellphone service and their views on the protests. They weren’t happy.

Although Civic Center is out of our territory, we feel obliged to cover the protests, as they impact the 16th Street and 24th Street BART stations.

In happier news:

The Udupi Palace at 1007 Valencia @ 23rd Street and Dosa, just up the street, made the SF Weekly Foodie list of top Indian restaurants.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
