Television news reporter materializes, seemingly from thin air, to shoot footage of police crossing the street holding crime scene tape.
It seemed like not the most auspicious start for the week, although things could be worse.

Good morning, Mission, indeed!

This morning, 17th Street between Mission and Capp was partially closed off as police interviewed possible eyewitnesses to a shooting.

According to SFPD officer Albie Esparza,  a man was shot in the back at 7:20 this morning outside a taqueria near the intersection of 17th and Mission.

The two auto body shops nearby, which were cordoned off when press arrived, appear to have been innocent bystanders — both were closed at the time of the shooting.

Not much detail so far on the suspects: They’re described as “two Hispanic men in a green car,” which could be any number of people. They drove by, fired two shots. One hit the victim in the back.

It’s more bad news for 17th and Mission, a nice intersection full of fine, upstanding folk, but one that has seen more than its share of violence this year.

As is SFPD practice whenever there’s a shooting, the Gang Task Force came out to help with the investigation. If it is thought to be gang-related, the investigation will be kicked over to them. So far, two people have been arrested but not charged.

“It’s hard to know more right now,” says Esparza. “Last I knew the victim was still in the operating room at San Francisco General.” According to officers on the scene, the victim’s injuries weren’t life-threatening, and he appears to be doing (relatively) well.

Esparza urges anyone with more information to call the SFPD’s anonymous tip line: 415-575-4444

  1. where did you get your info? i live above the auto shop in the picture, and they were closed when the shooting happened. the police found the victim closer to mission street away from the TWO auto body shops on this block. how do you know either of the auto shops were connected? don’t just write stuff without backing it up.

        1. Scott: totally cool. We’re a neighborhood paper, and when we make a misstep we like to hear about it.
