Feeling creative in the New Year? Inspired by Mission artists? We’ve compiled a list of visual art classes offered in the Mission. Some sessions begin as early as this week. If we’ve left out a class that you would like to recommend, please let us know in a comment or send us e-mail @

Art Classes with Sadie J. Valeri
Studio at 17th and Mission Street

Learn traditional realism techniques for painting and drawing from classically trained instructor Sadie Valeri. All levels welcome.

Weekly lecture demonstrations: classes on Mondays, starting February 7, or Thursdays, starting February 10. $20 per one-hour lecture.

Weekly long pose model sessions: Tuesdays starting February 1, $70 for four sessions; Thursdays starting February 10, $70 for four sessions; Mondays starting February 7, $110 for four (longer) sessions.

Drawing fundamentals workshop begins in May 2011.
Drawing and painting workshop begins in August 2011.
Figure drawing and oil painting begins in fall 2011.

Lessons cover various aspects of creating a painting, from the initial drawing to the finishing touches.

Private lessons are $85 for 90 minutes. For small groups (two to three people): $60 per person. All studio materials are included.


Reiner Art Lessons
2150 Folsom at 17th Street

Private lessons are offered on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays in classical painting, drawing the natural way, and addressing individual needs.

$90 for each 90-minute lesson (low-income rate $75). A discount of 10% is offered if you pay for six lessons at a time: $486 ($405 low-income). All materials are provided and included in the price.


Root Division
3175 17th Street at South Van Ness

A variety of classes is offered, including drawing, photography, screen printing and sewing. Sessions start in January, February and March.

Prices vary depending on the class, from $50 for two class sessions to $175 for six class sessions. Individual private classes: three classes for $100.

Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts

A variety of dance, music and art classes is offered on weekday evenings and Saturdays. Prices range from $5 to $12 per class.

Sirron Norris

Cartooning for kids and adults on Saturdays, starting January 15. $100 for five classes.

Adult cartooning, Munny workshop and after-school art classes are also offered.

A variety of workshops is offered, including Expanding your Creativity Through Expressive Arts and 3D Illustration, beginning January 11.

Precita Eyes

The Community Mural Arts Education Workshop is a hands-on experience in directing, designing and planning a community mural under the guidance of a master muralist, Susan Cervantes. Third Tuesday of every month, 7 to 9 p.m. 
$50 ($40 members). Pre-registration is required.

Youth art classes are available as well.

Walking in the streets of the Mission takes Lauren back to the streets of South America. Up until now, she’s known the Mission through its bars and restaurants; now it’s the buzz on Mission Street that attracts her. She loves listening to the Spanish in the streets.
